1. The Golden Gate Casino, Las Vegas
We’ll kick this list off with The Golden Gate Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. It may not be the biggest or flashiest casino in the United States but The Golden Gate Casino is certainly one of the most historic.
Opened in 1906, this casino isn’t only the oldest casino in Nevada, but it’s also one of the oldest casinos in the world. The casino was originally called Hotel Nevada and has an interesting story to tell.
In 1909, gambling in Sin City was outlawed. Therefore, Golden Gate Casino could no longer operate as a casino. However, until gambling was made legal once more, the ‘Hotel’ would host all the small stake games and non-cash tournaments it could get away with.
This casino is still popular today.
2. The Golden Nugget, Las Vegas
You won’t have been surprised to see one Las Vegas casino on our list, so you shouldn’t be surprised to see two. Golden Nugget hasn’t always been a corporate casino but it has always had a rich history.
Despite a previously shady background, The Golden Nugget Casino was one of the first casinos in Las Vegas to offer artists residency. Impressively they started with Frank Sinatra.
Sinatra had close ties to the casino, as well as the type of organized crime that inspired The Godfather character Johnny Fontane.
Today, The Golden Nugget isn’t the brightest casino on the Las Vegas Strip, but it still has old-time charm and originality that draws gamblers in.
3. Silverado Franklin Historic Hotel & Gaming Complex, Deadwood
The quaint town of Deadwood in South Dakota is famous for its lively bars and historic casinos. One of the most historic is Silverado Franklin Historic Hotel & Gaming Complex.
The fact this hotel and casino has the word historic in its name already tells us history buffs are in for a real treat. The location of the hotel and casino has been a legendary spot in Deadwood since the gold rush in the town in 1875.
The casino was built in 1933, providing locals and American tourists with the perfect place to play casino games. Silverado is famed for having the largest poker room in town, an enormous player center, and for sitting in one of the most iconic areas in town.
This casino was only made more famous by the popular TV series Deadwood. In fact, there’s a good chance you might still be able to sit in the same spot as Wyatt Earp, Calamity Jane, and Wild Bill Hickok.
4. Caesars Palace, Las Vegas
We’ve already mentioned two Las Vegas casinos but we simply couldn’t leave Caesars Palace off our list. After all, it is arguably the most iconic casino in the whole of America, if not the world.
Founded in 1966 by Jay Sarno, Caesars Palace is a hotel and casino that sits on the west side of the Las Vegas Strip. Not only is it one of the best places in the United States to play casino games, but it’s also one of the largest and most famous landmarks in Las Vegas.
The casino has almost 4,000 rooms, features almost every casino game imaginable, and even has a 4,500-square-foot, 24-hour poker room.
World-famous stars such as Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Rod Stewart, and Celine Dion have taken the stage here during their careers.
5. Foxwoods Resort Casino, Ledyard
As far as historic casino resorts go, they don’t get much bigger and better than Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut. Owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, this enormous casino resort covers more than 9,000,000 square feet.
Opened in 1992, the casinos here feature more than 250 gaming tables, 5,500 slot machines, restaurants, and luxury accommodations.
Aside from being an iconic gambling destination, Foxwoods is also famous for its architecture. This resort features two impressive hotel towers, a retail complex, and a stunning front lawn.
